The Chaikin Institute for Geostrategy at the University of Haifa bows its head in sorrow upon learning of the passing of the Institute’s founder, Prof. Arnon Soffer, of blessed memory.

Arnon played a central role in building the University of Haifa from its earliest days. He was a member of the University’s founding generation, shaped the study of geography at the University, and established the Chaikin Chair in Geostrategy, from which the Institute that bears its name today grew. His vision - that academia must stand at the forefront and place research-based knowledge at the service of Israeli society - remains the compass that guides us to this day.

As a scholar, Arnon placed the geography of the Land of Israel and the Middle East at the heart of academic and public discourse. His pioneering research on demography, water, borders, and spatial issues shaped an entire field of knowledge and inspired generations of students, researchers, and educators who continue his legacy in universities and throughout the education system.

His contribution to the State of Israel extended far beyond the walls of academia. For decades, he taught at Israel’s National Security College and in senior Israel Defense Forces command programs, instilling in generations of commanders and decision-makers the understanding that the map, people, and space are fundamental to all strategic thinking.

His clear and resolute voice, never hesitant to speak the truth even when it was difficult to hear, accompanied Israel’s security and national discourse for half a century.

We - his students, colleagues, and those who continue in his footsteps - mourn his passing and honor his memory. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.

May his memory be a blessing.
