The Arnon Sofer Scholarships - Call for Submissions 2026/7

The Arnon Soffer Scholarships for the 2025–2026 Academic Year will be awarded by the Chaikin Institute for Geostrategy and the Herta and Paul Amir Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Haifa. The scholarship is intended for PhD candidates and research-track MA students writing a thesis, with the aim of supporting young researchers and advancing academic research at the University of Haifa.
The scholarship is open to University of Haifa students whose research proposal has been approved by the Graduate Studies Authority, and who have at least two years remaining until completion of their degree in the case of PhD students, and one year in the case of MA students (the determining date is the date indicated in the Graduate Studies Authority’s approval of the research proposal).*
Applications are welcome from all academic disciplines and may address the following topics, among others:
Geopolitics - The study of foreign policy and international relations, including the spatial dimensions of international conflicts, territorial disputes, and power relations between states.
International Relations – Diplomacy, international organizations, and global trends with geostrategic implications.
International Political Economy - The economic dimensions of international power relations, including international trade, sanctions, and state strategies concerning natural resources and foreign investment.
Political Science - Research on public, national, and international policy, including the impact of domestic politics on geostrategic strategies.
Human Geography - Population dynamics, migration, urban expansion, and their impact on foreign policy strategies.
Sociology of Globalization – Understanding globalization processes and their impact on economic systems.
Climate Change – The impact of climate change on foreign policy and geostrategy, including resource management, competition over water and energy, and environmental migration.
Natural Resource Management – Research on the impact of natural resources such as oil, gas, and minerals on international relations, trade agreements, and territorial conflicts.
Environmental Security – Understanding environmental threats, such as pollution, resource depletion, and natural disasters, and their impact on national and international security.
Energy Policy – Research on policies concerning renewable and non-renewable energy sources and their impact on the global economy and security.
Recipients of the scholarship are required to present their research at the annual Chaikin Conference and submit a summary for publication on the Institute’s website.
Scholarship recipients must acknowledge in their doctoral dissertation or MA thesis, as well as in any related publications, that the research was conducted with the support of the Chaikin Institute for Geostrategy and the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Students who have submitted their research proposal for approval but have not yet received formal approval may still apply for the scholarship. The committee will make its decision in consultation with the Graduate Studies Authority.
